It's Free Write Friday! My weekly writing routine allows students to write whatever they want and to have their writings celebrated! Participants will write freely as students before learning how to impact their own classroom communities. I will provide examples of student writing and share the details of what makes it an impactful and effective use of precious class time. The session will end with ideas for how to implement, ideas for modifying to meet the needs of each classroom, and collaborative brainstorming time.
The process of writing is hard work. Teaching writing, and helping students believe in themselves as writers, is even harder. Join Lisa Helsel, 2023 recipient of the NCTE Donald H. Graves Award for Excellence in Teaching Writing, as she shares ideas for connecting deeply with student writers and for helping them become aware of their own writing processes. Participants will walk away with assessment and reflection activities that can be used in classrooms across the grade levels.
