New arrival ELL students face unique obstacles to social integration in their new American school settings. Since students with strong interpersonal relationships at school tend to demonstrate higher academic achievement, educators and educational leaders must create structures and policies that address the unique obstacles faced by new arrival ELL students. This presentation will describe some of those unique obstacles and offer practical remedies that schools can use to overcome those obstacles.
